The Path Taken to the Reconciliation of Somaliland: A new Book Launched by IPRT (Photos)
The book named “Jidka loo soo Maray Dib u Heshiisiinta Somaliland [The path taken to the Reconciliation of Somaliland]” was officially launched in a well-organized ceremony held at Abaarso Tech University by the Institute for Practical Research and Training [IPRT]. The ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, politicians and other dignitaries.
Dr. Ahmed Hussein Esa, the Director of IPRT, commended the writer of the book, Mr Jamal Jama Jiir, and also in his turn explained thoroughly how Somaliland’s peace came into existence.
Mr. Jiir, the author of the book, thanked IPRT and its entire team for their relentless efforts in facilitating the publication of the book adding that he had been praying for the launching day to be successful.
The book reports how Somaliland clans gathered in traditional meetings after the Siad Barre’s regime is toppled in 1991 and Somaliland reiterated its independence from Somalia.
Starting in 1991, grass-roots peace initiatives gradually built up a national network of peace conferences. Using traditional institutions and diplomacy, they succeeded to a remarkable degree in restoring relative calm and normalizing inter-clan relations on an impressively wide front.
The results of this low budget, locally inspired process were much more impressive than those of the lavishly expensive high profile peace conferences engineered by foreign agencies in southern Somalia.
