Communication via the internet

The communications network

As all of the computers on the internet are connected, they have the potential to allow communication between users.

This module will therefore consider the main communication tools available to internet users. We will look at their scope and capability and usefulness, particularly in the context of teaching and research.

Using the internet for communication

Forms of communication on the internet can be classified as:

Asynchronous

Asynchronous communication is time-independent, so users do not have to be present at the same time.

Synchronous

Real-time communication enabling multiple users to join in a conversation as it happens, whether it's typed, spoken, or viewed. This requires users being present at same time.
