Electronic Mail

What is email?

Electronic mail or email is a system for transmitting messages between computers on a network.

This enables email users to send messages to other email users or groups of users, quickly, conveniently and cheaply.

In addition to it's use for personal communication, computers can also be set up to automatically respond to email messages, a facility which is used for the management of mailing lists.

Uses of email

  • Communication

Email is an effective and efficient way of keeping in touch with colleagues and friends around the world, because it is quick, cheap and relatively informal.

  • Collaboration

Email offers a simple means to communicate with groups of other email users to make announcements, ask questions and exchange documents.

  • Exchanging documents

Documents can easily be sent, edited, and re-sent via email. This makes email a fast and efficient medium for applications such as joint authoring of documents where the authors are geographically dispersed for remote supervision of theses. For an excellent example of usefulness of this feature, read about how a well-known book on networking was produced.
