Using email from suggestion to publication
Ed Krol, in the Preface
to his book "The Whole Internet User's Guide & Catalog" says:
... the existence of this book is a tribute to the power
and usefulness of the Internet
-
The story of the book's production centres around the use of electronic
mail. It was through email that:
-
the author and the editor met
-
the editor suggested doing the book
-
the plan for the book was worked out
-
draft chapters were sent to the editor for annotation and amendment
-
amended chapters were returned to the author
-
the entire book could be sent in the space of a few minutes (3 days by
normal post)
-
the author gathered much information for the Resource Catalog without having
to leave home.
Almost all of the many exchanges involved in editing and production of
the book were done by email, the exception being legalities and contracts.
Even after publication of the book, Krol had still not met anyone from
the publishing firm, but through email, had successfully worked with them
in producing an excellent book which went on to sell 250,000 copies and
ran into a second edition and has now been written for Windows 95 users.
