HARGEISA SCHOOL FOR DEAF CHILDREN

Few years back a local NGO that helps people with physical disabilities in Somaliland saw that deaf children in Hargeisa had no educational opportunities whatsoever.  The NGO rented a small room, furnished it with benches and a blackboard and with the help of a Kenyan-born Somali teacher started teaching the children to sign in English.  The lone teacher trained another Somali woman to sign and to teach the children how to read and write in Somali.

When IPRT visited the school a year and a half ago, there were 25 students.  The student body has now expanded to 45 and the children learn other subjects as well.

The NGO, with very meager resources, is able to pay for the rent of the school and provide the children with uniforms and few textbooks.

The school is, however, in dire need.  Without this school, these deaf children will be lost to society and will be relegated to a life of misery.  Their needs are modest and with  very little assistance, this school can be turned into a powerful center that could educate these children and turn them into productive members of society.

Your support can help the school acquire computer equipment and other educational aids. It can help these children gain the necessary skills towards gainful employment.  It can empower them and pave the way for other children with physical disabilities.

Please help the Hargeisa School for the Deaf.  You can donate through IPRT  or you can write to us at info@iprt.org and we will help you get in touch with the school and similar institutions in Somaliland.
