The Institute for Practical Research and Training

Hargeisa, Somaliland

The Institute for Practical Research and Training was established in 1998 to promote local initiatives in health, education, human rights and good governance in Somaliland. IPRT is based and registered in Somaliland as a nongovernmental, nonpolitical independent organization.

Main Activities

·    Conferences and Workshops

The Second Conference on Reconstruction/2000

IPRT organizes conferences, seminars and workshops on post-war reconstruction strategies in the Horn of Africa. Between 1999 and 2001, the Institute convened five meetings on post-war reconstruction, journalism and landmines.

·    Research

IPRT runs a field research center that provides guidance, office space and staff to visiting researchers and students

· Skills Training

To give new generations the practical skills needed to gain employment or to seek further education, the Institute has a continuing education program in Computer Applications, Management Skills and English Language

Orphanage Clinic

· Health

IPRT assists in the management and upkeep of a small health clinic for the Hargeisa Orphanage. The Institute plans to expand the clinic into a major health center and to use it as the locus of an extended public health program including vaccinations, AIDS prevention, and the training of community health workers.

· Human Rights

SAMOTALIS

IPRT hosts and serves as the secretariat for the Somaliland Human Rights and Humanitarian Coalition, SAMOTALIS, and helps publish SAMOTALIS monthly Human Rights newsletter. SAMOTALIS provides human rights education, spearheads minority and women’s rights, and promotes voter education and electoral reform.

· Governance

IPRT is a partner of the Somaliland House of Representatives. The Institute is helping the House develop its capacity to fulfill its democratic role. The production, for example, of a parliamentary bulletin will improve transparency and accountability.
